The presenters will share effective theory-based interventions that have increased persistence for Hispanic/Latino/a college students in particular, and students of color in general. In addition to providing an overview of theories that are critical to students, academic and social integration (e.g., Racial Identity Development Theory, Attribution Theory of Achievement and Emotion, Learned Optimism, Gestalt Educational Counseling Theory), the session will provide concrete, tangible strategies that can enable educators to motivate and support Hispanic/Latino/a students to take greater responsibility for their own learning, development, and success— both inside and outside the classroom, on-campus, and in their communities. The session will also address issues related to the need to focus specific efforts to increase the educational achievement of Latino males. That evening, there will be a follow- up session: Apoyando El Poder de Nuestra Voz with Gestalt Educational Counseling: Releasing the Natural Power We Have to Speak Up and Challenge Individuals/Systems in an Assertive and Effective Manner. Follow-up session will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Harding Room.
